If you want to read your favorite monthly magazine on your iPad with a more wallet friendly subscription you’re currently out of luck, but you’ll be interested to learn that it is not the publishers that are the bottleneck this time. It’s Apple, at least when it comes to Time, Inc. titles!
Last month Time planned to begin selling monthly subscriptions for their magazines, like Sports Illustrated. Readers would get the magazine via iTunes but pay Time not Apple. In the ninth hour, Apple rejected their app forcing the company to offer single copies for $4.99 instead, according to Peter Kafka at All Things D.
The way it works now, is you download the sample version and then pay for each new edition one at a time at full price. Other magazines that are forced to use the same model are Popular Mechanics and Wired. If you read many of the app store reviews, buyers are not happy about this model.
The reasons for Apple’s rejection of the subscription app is not known, but suspicion at Time is that it has to do with either fear at Apple over what Time will ...
Netbook News recently got the chance to test out Toshiba’s new netbook, the NB250, at Toshiba’s 25th anniversary press conference.
The Toshiba NB250’s specs aren’t anything out of the ordinary for a netbook. However, there are a few features that make this particular netbook somewhat unique. Toshiba included DDR3 RAM, which is faster than the standard DDR2 RAM that most other netbooks come with. Toshiba also included a multi-touch trackpad.
Toshiba NB250 Specs:
In the hands on video, Sascha Pallenberg of Netbook News runs through the full specifications as well as all of the available ports and connections. Of special note, Netbook News draws attention to the accessibility to the netbook’s hard drive, memory, and even the WiFi card, an attribute that is not found on all netbooks. This allows the end-user to upgrade hard drives and memory with ease. The keyboard is unique in that it combines a chic-let and ordinary keyboard which, according to Pallenberg, provides impressive feedback – though some of ...
HP has outfitted mobile operation centers for the Disable American Veterans (DAV) organization in order to help the group reach veterans who need assistance maximizing or gaining benefits.
The DAV, which provides its services free of charge, uses these Mobile Service Offices that are outfitted with HP notebooks and printers to visit veterans face to face in communities across the country and educate the veterans and their families on the various benefits and services available.
Normally these types of transactions would require a phone call, online interaction or long trip but thanks to mobile gear like these HP notebooks the help can come to the veterans. In this case the DAV is using HP EliteBooks and HPO All in One printers to support the mobile operations. The EliteBooks are professional grade notebooks that offer road warriors and mobile professionals a powerful machine. Dr. Dre and a slew of other artists have spent the summer promoting Beats Audio and the HP Envy line. Commercials are now airing on cable lifestyle channels, including MTV, FUSE and BET to raise raise awareness of notebook audio quality. HP’s Envy notebooks feature Beats audio, a combination of hardware and software that results in cleaner, crisper audio.
Click here to view the embedded video.
The vast majority of PC buyers simply do not currently consider audio when comparing computers. HP is trying to change that by featuring well-known musicians in its promo material and emphasizing the audio experience.
The commercial above is an exaggeration of what’s actually inside of HP’s notebooks in terms of audio hardware, but the fact is that the HP Envy puts out the cleanest audio signal we’ve ever heard on a notebook. Audio files come to life, even with mediocre headphones.
Even compressed and streamed audio, such as music from Pandora and Slacker, sound fantastic when using headphones with an HP Envy notebook. In fact, it can be difficult to listen to music on an iPhone or MacBook Pro after being spoiled by Beats audio. If you’re serious about music, we highly recommend bringing your favorite pair of headphones with you ...

Here’s a video demo and some photos of the Dell Streak, a mobile device based with a large 5″ display that runs on the Android. The Dell will be available soon direct from Dell with AT&T phone and 3G data service.
The Dell Streak is quite large. This is great if you often watch mobile videos or want to view web pages in their full glory, but it may be too big to use as a phone or lug around all day. If you do plan on using it as a phone, a Bluetooth headset is a must. As you can see, the Streak dwarfs the iPhone 4.
The Dell Streak is capable of running about 40,000 apps built for Google’s Android mobile operating system. Like many Android devices, the Dell Streak has a customized user interface, which means it looks and functions differently than others. The home screen, for example, is optimized for a horizontal orientation, while most Android smartphones are optimized for a vertical orientation.

Having access to the Internet and car buying guides while looking for a new car can help save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Sadly, I had to learn that the hard way this week. But thanks to my iPhone, iPad and Verizon MiFi, I had information at my fingertips to help make an informed decision about a new car purchase today.
Last week our car’s air conditioning went out. Not wanting to put too much in to a very old car we made the difficult choice to go ahead and buy a new vehicle. I went online and started searching. We have a good friend who sells Hondas so we checked out the inventory at his dealer’s web site.
Second, we went to our bank web site and used their online car buying tools. Check your bank to see if they have something similar.
Our bank is a credit union and they will let you apply for a loan online, get estimated payments based on their interest rates, and will help you find the values of both your trade in and the car you want to buy. I bookmarked these sites on my iPhone ...
As part of the most recent refresh to the popular Pavilion line of notebooks HP has released the HP Pavilion dv6z, an AMD powered notebook that includes a sleek looking metal alloy lid. The new HP Pavilion dv6z includes switchable graphics with an island style keyboard and starts at $579.
HP loaned us a review unit equipped with the AMD Phenom II Quad-Core Mobile Processor P920 and decked out in a black cherry lid to see what the HP dv6z can do.
After a few days with the device you can find our first impressions of the HP dv6z in the video below.
In short, the notebook felt very durable and the keyboard was easy to use with a generous trackpad below it. In the first few days of use it is worth noting that the keyboard and mouse may take some adjustment due to the row of function keys to the left of the keyboard and the new buttons incorporated mousepad style. While the processor was able to handle video editing and some gaming we noticed a few hangs or slow downs when the using multiple Chrome windows which is something we will be looking ...
With the Fall semester lurking right around the corner, now is the time for college students to start looking into essential software for their new computers. Seeing as the new school year is so close, many companies offer back to school promotions for students.
Below is a round-up of software that college students may want to look into. However, prior to purchasing any of this software, students should check with their school to find out what software is available to them for free, or at a large discount from the book store. Many schools offer pricing that is even better than what the actual company offers. For example, some schools offer Microsoft Office and Windows 7 for just $30 each.

The primary difference between these models is the lack of TurboBoost which allows the Core i5 processor to speed up specific cores as needed to offer better performance. Still, the ThinkPad X201 is a good deal and one worth looking at if you are in the market for a powerful 12.1″ notebook.
The ThinkPad X201i is on sale currently for $999, but you can get it even cheaper with the 15% off Lenovo coupon code UPSTHINKBTS.

Yesterday the Library of Congress ruled that jailbreaking phones is indeed legal, but that doesn’t mean you should rush out and jailbreak your new iPhone. Apple’s letting it be known that doing so will void your warranty.
Apple’s tightly controlled the iPhone experience since day one to provide a consistent user experience. However, some users feel tied down and want to install applications that aren’t Apple approved. In order to do this, they ‘Jailbreak’ their phones to install applications and games from outside of the official Apple App Store.
In a statement to Cult of Mac, Apple said:
“Apple’s goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we’ve said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.”

HP was kind enough to send over an HP EliteBook 2540p for review. The unit is nicely configured and is the kind of notebook that road warriors yearn for. This is truly a professional-grade notebook and while we’re working on a full review we thought we’d give you our first impressions of the 2540p.
From the first time you use the 2540p, it’s apparent that it’s not your run of the mill notebook. Its aluminum and magnesium construction feels very solid and everything about it just feels great.

While it weighs in at just under four pounds, the 2540p HP sent over is packed with features and high-performance components. At the heart of the 2540p is a 2.13GHz Intel Core i7 low-voltage processor, 4GB of memory and a 1.8″ 250GB hard drive. The $1,629 configuration of the 2540p comes with a 6-cell battery that sticks out of the back of the computer.
The footprint of the 2540p is roughly the same as a standard letter-sized sheet of paper, which means it can easily fit in a small bag or large purse, making it much easier to travel with than the 14″ and 15″ notebooks that companies issue to most employees.

Though not expected to be released until sometime in August, the folks over at Liliputing got their hands on the new Dell Inspiron M101z, Dell’s latest thin and light laptop.
Dell Inspirons have been a long time favorite of college students. They have proven to provide adequate computing power and features at a very economical price.
The Dell Inspiron M101z is about the same size as the Dell Inspiron 11z, but sports an all new design. Aside from the obvious visual overhaul, the most notable change is inclusion of AMD and ATI components, rather than Intel. The base model will come with:
The new Inspiron M101z features a wide touchpad with two distinct buttons for left and right clicking. Liliputing notes that the two buttons are easier to use than earlier Inspiron models which had the buttons integrated directly into the touchpad. Bordering the island-style keyboard is a sharp metallic finish, adding a bit of class to the laptop.

Shenit.com recently began the international shipment of its Sony VAIO P knock off, the “Pocket Sony Style L80 Mini Laptop”. The laptop sports a design reminiscent of the Sony VAIO P, but at only a fraction of the cost.
Many Sony VAIO P knock offs have appeared, though most were only available in Asia. The Pocket Sony Style L80 Mini Laptop contains features very similar to the VAIO P.

Pocket Sony Style L80 Mini Laptop Specs:
The Sony VAIO P offers a few more color options than the “Sony Style” laptop’s black and white color schemes. Also, the Sony VAIO P comes with 2GB of RAM as well as 128GB HDD.
With phrases like “super wide keyboard design”, “good quality”, and “you can carry it to go outside.3″, you would be wise to approach this gadget with a bit of skepticism. But at only $299, it may be worth a gamble to some; especially when compared to the $900 Sony VAIO P.
