A $1,449 version of the Area-51 m15x is coming soon, but getting a low-end Alienware is kinda like buying a muscle car with a wimpy six-cylinder engine: all show, no go.

The $2,149 Area-51 m15x comes with a 15.40inch 1440 x 900 display, which can display content of up to 720p. For $300 you can upgrade to a WUXGA, with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 LCD, for full 1200p goodness.

Alienware blasted out a newsletter email tonight inviting newsletter subscribers to have an early chance at ordering the new m15x gaming laptop. People have been placing orders and have quoted shipping dates of February 1, 2008.

Chris from Alienware showed me the new Area 51 m15x gaming and multimedia notebook. It’s the only 15.4-inch notebook with Intel Core 2 Extreme processor and NVIDIA 8800M GTX graphics card. The Area 51 m15x has a media bay that can handle a second hard drive, for up to 640GB of storage. There’s an optional Blu-ray drive if you want to enjoy movies at full 1080p goodness.

The Area 51 m15x has some serious horsepower for a 15.4-inch notebook. It’s also got some nice design touches, like the customizable keyboard and trackpad LEDs.
