Last night I headed over to the BlogHaus (a suite at the Bellagio hotel that’s set up with everything a blogger could possibly need to blog to the wee hours of the morning) and snapped this picture of a bunch of bloggers unanimously working on MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

Earlier in the night, there were a couple of guys from Microsoft using Sony VAIO SZ’s and the guys from GottaBeMobile.com were using a ThinkPad and a pair of OQO handhelds.
I posted earlier about the prominence of MacBooks and MacBook Pros in the blogger and press rooms here at CES 2008. There are A LOT more people using Apple products at CES compared to last year.
The BlogHaus is organized by Podtech.net and sponsored by Seagate. They gave me a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini hard drive. It has a metallic case and it feels very solid, unlike external drives with plastic cases.
I’m at the blogger’s lounge in CES, along with bloggers from some of the best known gadget sites. There are about 18 bloggers blogging right now and the only guy on a PC is Wille from Feber.se. Wille says he’s switching to a Mac when Apple comes out with an ultraportable.
The CrunchGear guys are using MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The Gizmodo guys are on a pair of MacBook Pros. Jose from Wired.com is sitting next to me and he’s on a MacBook. Paul from DVICE.com is on a MacBook.
I’m using a MacBook Pro (2.2GHz, 4GB memory, 250GB hard drive, Leopard) to blog and edit videos at CES. I’m also using a Sony VAIO TZ Series notebooks (1.2GHz Intel ULV, 2GB memory 32GB SSD) to broadcast live.
It’s interesting to see that Apple products are nearly the unanimous tool of choice for a group of people who spend 24/7 writing about gadgets.
Apple’s next iPhone firmware update will bring some much-needed improvements to Google Maps and SMS. iPhone users will finally be able to send text messages to multiple contacts and use Google Maps for Mobile’s GPS-ish locating service.
iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 will also allow users to customize the home screen. The dock can be customized to include your favorit apps. You will be able to add Safari bookmarks as icons on the home screen and reshuffle all of your icons. If you run out of space, you can paginate your icons across multiple home screens.
As an iPhone owner, it’s great to see Apple continually improving the iPhone, but there are still a ton of features that need to be added. One of my pet peeves with expensive gadgets is when they don’t have some of the basic functions that much cheaper alternatives do. Unfortunately, it appears there’s still no way to send photos via SMS.
Check out the below video demo from Andru at Gear Live, who got his hands on a beta version of iPhone Firmware 1.1.3.
The ModBook, the third-party MacBook tablet, may finally see the light of day a year after it was introduced at MacWorld 2007. I’d written off the Mac OSX Tablet as vaporware after numerous delays and excuses from Axiotron, its designer, and Other World Computing, which is the Modbook’s exclusive retailer.
The ModBook may be a year too late, as many industry experts are speculating that a revamped MacBook will be announced next month at MacWorld 2008.

We're a little more than a month away from the Macworld Expo, and the expectations are starting to get a little clearer for arguably Apple's biggest show of the year.
CNBC reported Thursday that Apple plans at Macworld to introduce a 12-inch Mac laptop with flash memory in ...
CNBC is reporting that the much-rumored thin and light MacBook Pro will be announced at Macworld next month. The reporter’s inside source says the compact notebook will be about half as thick as current models and feature a solid state drive. The new Macbook Pros will cost about $1,500.
The reporter mistakingly states (we think) the notebook will have a 12-inch display. Based on recent reports of Apple bumping up 13.3.inch display orders, this is unlikely. We expect the new thin MacBook Pro to have a 13.3-inch display.

(Credit: CNET Networks Inc.)It was bound to happen--I just didn't expect it so soon. I plunked down for a MacBook on Black Friday and now, not a week after receiving it, rumors are circulating that new and improved models are on the way. ...
AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson said a 3G Version of the Apple iPhone will be available next year during a Chruchill Club dinner in Silicon Valley. He said Apple will “dictate what the price of the phone is.”
The current iPhone uses AT&T’s EDGE network, making browsing and streaming multimedia content extremely slow. The lack of 3G is the iPhone’s biggest weakness. A 3G iPhone will need to have a higher capacity battery and/or improved power management since operating on the faster network takes a lot more power.
The next iPhone will likely have at least a 16GB capacity.

Here’s a Microsoft Zune commercial that makes me want to never buy a Zune. The entire comercial is made up of two cobras in a desert fighting over an ice cream cone…really that’s it. No Zune, no features, nothing. Just snakes licking an ice cream cone….mmmmm maybe the new Zunes taste good.
The new Zune ads have generally avoided showing off features, instead showing people in a daydream-state, parading around with giant jelly fish and dancing bunnies.
If the Zune is going to have a fighting chance, Microsoft’s going to need to put out some more compelling ads that will get people to actually want to go out and buy a Zune. I’m not suggesting they copy Apple’s iPod ads, but people seem to be having a much more positive reaction to the current iPod Touch and Nano ads. I’ve heard people humming the music from the ads and buying these songs on iTunes. TV Shows are making paraodies of the iPod ads. People are BUYING iPods because of them.
I can’t believe Microsoft and its ad agency actually signed off on this. I really hope the Zune puts up a good fight this holiday, ...

There aren’t any significant discounts on MacBooks or MacBook Pros for Black Friday, but there’s a killer deal at Fry’s Electronics on the 20-inch iMac.
Usually priced at $1,449, the 20-inch iMac has a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 320GB hard drive and the ATI 2600 PRO GPU wth 256MB of video RAM. It’s equipped with an 802.11n wireless card so you can easily network it with your notebooks.
I know this is off topic, and we pretty much ignore desktops here at Notebooks.com, but this deal is too good to pass up if you happen to live near a Fry’s store.
Apple rarely discounts products and seems to hold a magic spell over its retail partners, preventing them from advertising low prices like this.
There’s no word on how many will be available at each Fry’s store.
Apple is teasing us with a Black Friday email, but it doesn’t give ANY details on any discounts. I think it will be unlikely for them to discount the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Instead, they’ll probably throw in some extra freebies with the purchase of a system.
