An interesting review on the new Apple Air. In case you were uncertain about how might use the laptop with a CD/DVD optical drive. Light is good but so is functionality.

Non-replaceable batteries! Are they kidding? I wanted to drool over the MacBook Air, expecting to find a reason to hate myself even more, but at US$1799+ this is not something you can show your grandkids in the same way we get to still enjoy an old Rolleiflex camera or a 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt. Rhino Skin introduced a new anodized aluminum case for MacBoks at MacWorld. The case is like a laptop sleeve on steroids. It’s super tough, but there’s zero room for accessories.
I like the idea of the Rhino Skin, but I don’t like how the MacBook just sits in it and isn’t secured to the case in any way.
The Rhino Skin Aluminum case for MacBooks will cost $149.

Here’s the first MacBook Air ad, with the tagline “the world’s thinnest notebook.” The commercial shows how the MacBook Air can fit inside an inter-office envelope, but doesn’t show a single other feature.
I generally like simple ads, and I think this one will be effective. I do hope Apple follows up with some ads that highlight some of its features, like it did with its iPhone commercials.

A couple of hours after posting some pics and videos of the MacBook Air at MacWorld I got a text message alert that my wife had just updated her status on Facebook to “…secretly hopes Xavier gets the MacBook Air.” Not wanting to disappoint her, I headed over to Apple.com and ordered one, which should arrive in a couple of weeks.
There are more computers and gadgets clogging my home office and living room than I can count, and I hear about this problem on a daily basis. It takes a LOT for my wife to actually encourage me to pick up a new device. Now she didn’t exactly force me to buy a MacBook Air, but any hint that she wants me to buy a gadget is a far cry from her usual reaction when I even suggest that I’m going to add to my stable of electronics.
Like I mentioned before, I don’t consider the MacBook Air an ideal primary notebook for power users, but it will make a fine secondary MacBook in our household. I do all of the heavy-lifting on my MacBook Pro and the various PC notebooks that float in and ...

When Jobs said the MacBook Air was thin, he wasn’t kidding. I spent some quality time with a MacBook Air and snapped this pic of my iPhone next to it. The base of the MacBook Air, which holds all the guts and brains of the laptop, is actually thinner than my iPhone!
The MacBook Air makes my MacBook Pro look HUGE.

I just spent about 30 minutes playing with a MacBook Air at MacWorld 2008. The MacBook Air is impressively thin, but Apple’s asking users to make too many trade offs. Check out the quick video walk-through and photos below.
There are tons of sites, including Apple’s own, that praise the MacBook Air to no end, but I found several flaws that will keep me from recommending the MacBook Air as a primary notebook for most users.
1) Only 1 USB port. The MacBook Air has a single USB port, which is fine for some users with basic syncing needs. But if you’re like me and have several USB devices this is going to be a major issue. I carry a portable USB drive, USB EVDO wireless card, memory card adapter, iPhone, and a Sony camcorder with a USB cradle. Sure, you could carry a USB hub, but that kinda defeats the purpose of the whole thin and light idea.2) Internal Battery
The MacBook Air’s internal battery can get “up to” five hours of battery life. That’s not enough for a cross-country flight or a full day of work. You’ll need to send your MacBook Air in for ...

The new MacBook Air is svelte-as-can-be, but it's also missing some key, traditional Mac functionality that might leave some users disappointed or in a lurch. Steve Jobs announced iTunes Movie rentals at MacWorld 2008. I’ve bought a couple of movies from iTunes, but it’s pretty tough to spend $13 to $20 for a movie I just want to watch on a plane ride home. The new movie rentals will cost $2.99 for older films, and $3.99 for new releases.
Once you rent a movie via iTunes you have 30 days to start watching it and 24 hours to finish watching it.

Apple just announced the Airport Extreme router with a choice of either a 500GB or 1TB drive that can be used to backup with Time Machine. Very cool, but the $499 price tag for the 1GB version is tough to swallow. You can also plug in USB drives to the router for more storage capacity. I wonder if Apple will have some kind of patch that will let us backup with Time Machine on last year’s Airport Extreme model.

I’m sitting a couple of hundred feet from the soon to be announced MacBook Air, or whatever Steve Jobs has chosen to call it/them. Unfortunately, I received an email from MacWorld’s PR staff while I was at CES that dis-invited me from the Steve Jobs keynote because of capacity issues. Instead of being bitter about missing the keynote, I’m taking it as an opportunity to be one of the first to go hands on with the new MacBooks. As soon as the exhibit hall doors open at 11 am PST, I’m going to dive right into the new MacBook display and start shooting some video and snapping pics. Check Back shortly for an update.

Last night I headed over to the BlogHaus (a suite at the Bellagio hotel that’s set up with everything a blogger could possibly need to blog to the wee hours of the morning) and snapped this picture of a bunch of bloggers unanimously working on MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

Earlier in the night, there were a couple of guys from Microsoft using Sony VAIO SZ’s and the guys from GottaBeMobile.com were using a ThinkPad and a pair of OQO handhelds.
I posted earlier about the prominence of MacBooks and MacBook Pros in the blogger and press rooms here at CES 2008. There are A LOT more people using Apple products at CES compared to last year.
The BlogHaus is organized by Podtech.net and sponsored by Seagate. They gave me a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini hard drive. It has a metallic case and it feels very solid, unlike external drives with plastic cases.
