The proliferation at Computex of ultra-small, inexpensive netbooks poses this pesky question: why are traditional ultra-compact laptops so expensive?

ASUS showed off the Eee PC 901, 1000 and 1000 (H) models today at Computex 2008 in Taipei. The new Eee PCs are more robust and expensive than earlier versions. The low-cost ultraportable market is really heating up and ASUS isn’t standing still.
The ASUS Eee PC 1000 and 1000(H) are the largest Eee PCs yet, with a 10-inch display. These two models feature Intel’s Atom processor, up to 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth, a 1.3MP webcam, 802.11 WiFi
While previous models had downright anemic storage solutions, the Eee PC 1000 has 40GB of solid state flash memory and the 1000(H) model features an 80GB hard drive.
A very welcome improvement over smaller version is that the 10-inch Eee PCs have a keyboard that’s 92% of the size of a full-sized keyboard, putting it in line with other affordable ultraportables such as the HP 2133 Mini-note and VIA OpenBook-based computers.
ASUS Eee PC 1000 buyers will be able to choose between Linux and Windows XP operating systems. The ASUS Eee PC 1000 weighs in at 2.93 pounds, while the 1000(H) weighs 3.20 pounds.
The ASUS Eee PC 1000(H) is selling for $625 in Taiwan, but US prices have not been announced ...
