The ASUS CES 2009 press conference is under way where they’re announcing new notebooks and talking about touch based computing.

Asus is introducing a new ultraportable that will run for up to 8 hours on a single charge. It features a 512 GB SSD!

Obligatory Microsoft/Asus love fest. We get it. They work together and like each other more than any two companies should.

They are now demonstrating the N-series ultraportable with muilti-touch. Looks very cool , but the demo is crashing…oops. The N20 demo crashed and burned. We’ll check this out later.

They are now explaining the M50 notebook. It’s a dual-system design so it’s like having two computers in one. The ARM-based computer is instant-on and can last for up to 12 hours. The touch pad is a 4.3-inch display for the secondary system. You can view messages, calendars, movies and more on it. It’s kind of gimmicky, but a neat concept.

Does your laptop take too long to turn on? Linux-based instant-on operating systems have turned up on plenty of recent laptops, such as the Splashtop-powered Asus N10J, and now Phoenix is jumping into the action with its HyperSpace OS, as featured on a handful of new Lenovo laptops including the S10 Netbook. We got a chance to get a hands-on preview with HyperSpace.

Hyperspace boots up automatically when you start your laptop, instead of Windows. The emphasis is clearly on Web surfing, as the landing screen is a custom Web browser with a sidebar full of links and settings. After going to the difficulty of squeezing the laptop down to the diminutively-sized Asus Eee PC 701, Asus now seems to be resolute to reverse the trend.

Spore, the popular “casual” game from EA, has received as much sales and fanfare as it has controversy from its DRM policies.  Spore sold 1M copies and 25M creations were created in its first 2 weeks so no one questions its popularity.  But, does anyone question the quality of the visual experience between different notebook technologies?   They should, as there are big differences that could really impact their enjoyment.  One would expect that today on modern notebooks these differences wouldn’t exist but they definitely do.

Brian Henry, a software engineer in our Performance and Experience Lab, provided me with some data that I thought was interesting.  He showed me a visual comparative analysis of Spore on two HP Pavilion dv5 notebooks, both with integrated graphics.  One system was an AMD-based (”Puma”) and the other an Intel-based (Montevina).  Interestingly, the Intel-based system demonstrated significant difference in Spore quality.
