The Dell Inspiron 1525 is now available with a Blu-ray disc player for just $879, making it the cheapest notebook to include the high definition format. The Blu-ray disc player is a $280 option on Dell’s 15.4-inch mainstream computer, while a Blu-ray burner is $480.

The Dell Inspiron comes with an HDMI port, which makes it possible to watch Blu-ray movies on your HDTV. The Blu-ray options are available on any Inspiron 1525 configured with a 1.83GHz or faster processor.

Blu-ray at this price is tempting, but I still recommend holding off on ordering a notebook with Blu-ray. High definition movie playback is only half of the Blu-ray story. Dell’s blowing out its Latitude D420 series notebooks, which are now priced from $599. That’s $988 off its original price and about $800 cheaper than the D430 that recently replaced the D420.

The Latitude D420 is a thin and light 12-inch notebook that’s optimized for business users on the go. It uses a single-core Intel processor, has a 60GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. This is not the fastest Latitude you can buy, but this is the best price for an enterprise 12-inch notebook on the market right now.

The Latitude D420 priced at $599 comes with Windows XP. Vista Business and Vista Ultimate are optional.

Dell’s planning to release the Latitude XT2 tablet in November to replace the Latitude XT will be revamped and the Latitude XT tablet, according to Dell’s product road map. Dell’s considering adding a slim optical drive to its tablets.

The Latitude XT2 will come with Intel Centrino 2 technology, which includes low-voltage or ultra low-voltage processors. The Latitude XT2 will get an eSATA port.

It will be intersting to see if the Latitude XT2 actually gets a built-in optical drive. Most thin and light business tablets, like the Latitude XT, HP Compaq 2710p and the Lenovo ThinkPad X61t, put the optical drive in an optional docking solution rather than the notebook itself. Lenovo crammed a DVD burner in the recently released ThinkPad X300, which is thinner and lighter than any of these tablets.

The image of the XT2 is an illustration and the final product may look significantly different.
