A small step up from Dell in the low-price notebook market, Gateway has always been able to pack their laptops with some pretty decent specs. The Gateway MC-7803u is no exception. Hitting the street at $1000, the MC-7803u is a well designed, nice looking desktop replacement. With it’s Intel Duo T5800 and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 graphics set, it should be able to handle all you everyday home office and internet needs, as well as some basic gaming and editing. And while the MC-7803u is

Gateway’s released the MC-Series, a new line of entertainment notebooks that feature a frameless 16-inch (16:9 1366×768) aspect ratio display.

Gateway is selling two models out of the gate- the MC7801u and the MC7803u. Both of these models come with the Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Edition.

One of the first MC-Series models to hit store shelves is the Gateway MC7801u, which will retail for $949.99. It comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (T5800 2.0Gz), 320GB hard drive 4GB of DDR2 667MHz memory and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD. It comes with a burgundy display lid and a brushed metal palm rest

For $999.99 you can upgrade to the MC7803u, which has the same configuration as the MC7801u, except it has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 graphics with 512MB of memory. It has a black lid and a synthetic leather palm rest.

Blu-ray is missing in these first two models, but Gateway will most likely release more MC-Series notebooks in time for the holidays that will have Blu-ray drives.

All Gateway MC-series notebooks come with 802.11n wireless, a 1.3MP web-cam and 5-in-1 card reader (Memory Stick™ (MS), Memory Stick™ Pro, Multi Media Card™ (MMC), Secure ...

We don't normally concern ourselves with what big retail stores put on sale every week--after all, they spend enough money to advertise their wares, they certainly don't need our help.

But while flipping through the Sunday sales circulars in the New York Times, we spotted the recently reviewed Gateway P-7811FX laptop in the Best Buy ad. We loved the latest version on Gateway's bargain-priced gaming rig enough to give it an Editors' Choice award--but we did grouse that at $1,450, it was about $100 more than previous versions.

For this week, at least, the P-7811FX is on sale for $1,249, which is a great deal for an Intel P8400 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 1,920x1,200 17-inch display, and Nvidia's new GeForce 9800 graphics card.

The ad even promises a free PC game (up to $49.99), so you can show off Crysis on a laptop that can actually play it. That being said, we'd avoid the PC game bundled in the newspaper circular--we probably don't need a GeForce 9800 to play James Patterson's Women's Murder Club. ...

    2GB too many

    (Credit: Gateway)

Last month's desktop announcement from Gateway showed us two things: one, that desktop memory is now more affordable than ever; and two, that the 64-bit software era is upon us in full force. Each of the four desktops Gateway announced that day comes with 64-bit Vista, and they also all have either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. Considering the decidedly mainstream $550 to $1,150 price range for those PCs, all of a sudden those exotic features don't seem so exotic any more. But then we got our hands on one of those new Gateways for a review. What we found surprised us.
