The HP 2133 Mini-Note is getting official today and I’m really excited to say that real mobile computing is coming to the masses. This tiny notebook can easily slip into a purse, but is easy on the wallet with a starting price of just $499. Its good looks, professional-grade finishes and respectable specs make it a notebook that you’ll want to show off.
I got the chance to sit down with a few of HP’s product managers for a demo and I’ve been using a pre-production HP 2133 for the past week. The HP 2133 blew away my expectations and I’d be comfortable relying on the HP 2133 while on short business trips or on vacation.
Video Walkthrough of the HP 2133 Mini-Note
Until the HP 2133 there have been two kinds of notebooks in this size range. At the low end is the sub $400 Asus Eee PC, which has a display and keyboard that are too small for adults and an anemic 4GB of flash storage. On the other end of the spectrum is the uber-exclusive Sony VAIO TZ series that can cost upwards of $3,400.

Surprising virtually no one, Hewlett-Packard has finally officially announced its new low-cost, low-power NetBook-style mini-laptop, called the 2133 Mini-Note PC. Of course, we've been following every detail of this system for months, including the presumed launch date, but they're finally officially on sale starting today, from $499-$749. ...
Notebook batteries are hard to come by these days, thanks to a fire at an LG Chem factory. Orders for HP and Dell are being severely delayed, and Asustek is warning that 40% of second quarter notebook shipments could be affected.
We’re now facing a global battery shortage, which could mean waiting longer for your new notebook and replacement batteries. A friend of mine said orders for a battery for the HP Compaq nc6000 series notebooks are delayed through the end of April. He also said Apple MacBook Pro batteries are impossible to find for his clients.
Prices for Dell batteries have gone up and I wouldn’t be surprised if other manufacturers followed suit. LG Chem is Korea’s second largest producer of notebook batteries, behind Samsung.

If you're not making a cheap and tiny laptop to compete with the Asus Eee PC, what are you doing? HP's forthcoming mini-notebook will use Via processors (not Isiah, however) and start at $549, so says a spec sheet that Engadget got its hands on. The ...

Have trouble finding an extra or replacement battery for your laptop? Both Dell and HP say they are experiencing a laptop battery shortage after a March 3 fire knocked out a major supplier of the batteries.
Besides Dell and HP, the fire that gutted a plant owned by South Korea'...
Vista’s been out for more than a year, but Notebooks.com visitors still love Windows XP. About 68% of our readers are using Windows XP, while just over 10% are using Vista. Just under 10% are using Mac OSX.
Our friends over at jkOnTheRun and GottaBeMobile posted their visitors’ operating systems preferences and inspired me to run a similar report. Here’s a chart with full details.

James was really surprised to see that 14% of jkOnTheRun visitors are running Mac OSX because he and Kevin focus on Tablet PCs and ultramobiles. Rob from GottabeMobile was surprised that “only 22%” of his site’s visitors are using Vista. That’s twice the share compared to Notebooks.com.
If you haven’t moved on from XP, you shouldn’t feel like a laggard. In fact, on of our most popular posts is about a small business notebook that comes with Vista business. I posted the specs and video here, but the discussion quickly turned to how to upgrade/downgrade to XP.

The Birthplace of Silicon Valley is a 12′ x 18′ garage where Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard founded Hewlett-Packard in 1939. I got a rare opportunity to visit the garage that served as HP’s headquarters when it was a tiny startup.
HP Archivist Anna Mancini hosted the tour and I got a chance to hang out with bloggers from Gear Live, Hardware Geeks and Windows Now. Afterwards we had dinner and talked about computers, gadgets and blogging with part of the HP marketing team.
I’ve heard some of the lore and seen pictures of HP’s garage before, but seeing it in person made was awesome. It’s still hard to believe that HP got its start in such a humble little garage with just $500 in cash and a used drill press.
We didn’t move around too much since the former HP headquarters is about the size of my bedroom, but Anna provided a ton of interesting info. Here are a few factoids she shared:
- The garage was behind Dave and Luicile Packard’s small Palo Alto apartment, as was a small shed, where Hewlett slept.
- The company’s name was decided by a coin toss. If it landed ...
Intel will roll out its first wave of mainstream 45-nanometer "Montevina" Centrino 2 mobile processors by June then follow this up in September with additional chips including the first quad-core mobile processor.

HP's HDX gaming laptop would be a candidate for the mobile quad-core chip
(Credit: HP, Intel)...I went to Costco in South San Francisco to pick up a couple of pairs of jeans (my gadget budget’s taken a big bite out of my casual clothing budget) and ended up helping a couple of people choose new notebooks. I found five HP Pavilion notebooks and one Sony VAIO notebook on display and some very confused customers.
Costco is a discount warehouse and doesn’t have trained sales people who can help customers choose a proper notebook. Instead, they zip-tie a spec sheet to each of the notebooks and call it a day.
When I walked up to the notebook display a woman was trying to buy a 17-inch dv96xx series notebook for just over $800. A Costco employee was nice enough to go to the storage cage to see if they had one in stock, but said he didn’t know anything about computers. He stopped another employee and told him to help the customer, but he was busy moving some boxes and wasn’t prepared to talk about computers either.
I volunteered to help the customer and she insisted that she had to have a computer with 805f Wireless (something that doesn’t exist) and a 250GB hard drive because her computer teacher ...
The HD format wars are over and HD DVD is dead, but apparently somebody forgot to tell the guys over at HP’s Product System’s Group. HP is the only major notebook manufacturer that’s actively marketing HD DVD optical drives for notebooks.
Blu-ray and HD DVD are too competing high-definition disc formats. Toshiba was the leading proponent of HD DVD, while Sony is the driving force behind Blu-ray. Last month Toshiba announced it stopped producing HD DVD drives and would ‘evaluate’ discontinuing HD DVD notebooks. Movie studios have stopped releasing HD DVD movies and Toshiba says it will stop manufacturing blank HD DVD discs for HD DVD-R drives.
Instead of having a disclaimer or yanking HD DVD from its notebook configuration pages, HP is touting HD DVD suitable for “top-notch games and movies.”

HP’s not the only company that still sells HD DVD-equipped notebooks, but it is the only one that’s still offering HD DVD drives on customized systems. HP still prominently features HD DVD drives on its product description pages, configuration pages and ‘help me decide’ pop-ups. This bit of marketing is enough to confuse customers and ...

If we didn't know better, we might think that some of the marketing people at Hewlett-Packard had discovered some new recreational activities. It started off simple enough, with a mildly interesting design for a new Bluetooth mouse. Then the "Clay" laptop was a little weird, but we ...
HP’s released the dv2800t Artist Edition notebook, which is a dv6800t that features custom artwork by João Oliveira, a 20 year old from Portugal His Asian Odyssey design beat out thousands of other designs in a HP and MTV sponsored contest. If you’re looking for something that stands out from the crowd of notebooks, take a look at this one.
I got the chance to meet João in Las Vegas at CES 2008. Check out the interview here if you want to learn more about him and his design. While the dv2800t Artist Edition isn’t something I would by for myself, I can defintiely understand its appeal to students.
So what is the Artist Edition?
The HP Pavilion 2800t Artist Edition Series is a personalized HP Pavilion notebook that has that is very similar to the customizable Pavilion 2700t. HP’s customers who opt for the Artist Edition notebook will pay a $65 premium compared to a similar HP notebook without the special graphics.
The artwork is imprinted in the lid and palm rest, which means it will not fade or chip. Some notebook manufacturers print ...
Save up to $430 on HP Pavilion dv9700t customizable notebooks. Includes $150 instant savings, 50% off discrete graphics ($50 value), 50% off HD DVD ($75 value), FREE upgrade to webcam and fingerprint reader ($50 value), $100 off Vista Ultimate ($100 value), FREE shipping ($49 value), FREE printer after mail in rebate ($70 value), and a FREE skin ($30 value).
The free upgrades are a nice touch, but most users will want to avoid the HD DVD option. Blu ray has won the high-def format wars and the HD DVD optical drive is obsolete since studios will no longer be releasing movies in HD DVD format. I’d also recommend most home users hold off ordering Vista Ultimate.
