So I finally decided to pick up a laptop for myself. I was a bit confused on what to look in for in a notebook as I had never used a laptop before.My first hurdle was deciding on a screen size. I definitely knew I didn’t want a tiny ultraportable 12” or a desktop replacement 17”. So my choices narrowed down to a 14” or a 15” laptop.

I caught up with Phil McKinney, HP’s Chief Technology Officer for Personal Systems Group, at CES 2008 and we talked about what he’s carrying these days. He uses an iPaq 610 with Windows Mobile and a Compaq 2710p, with an integrated 3G wireless broadband card.

Phil’s known for being a gadget junkie and carrying around prototypes, but he said he’d have to shoot me if I peeked inside his briefcase. He’s probably got some James Bond-esque gadgets in there since he’s got HP Labs at his disposal. When I was in China last year, Phil showed off a WebSigns (point and search) equiped iPaq and an eBook reader.

HP’s updated the HDX with improved specs and an optional Blu-ray disc drive. This updated 20.1-inch notebook starts at less than $1,999, but extras can push the price tag to more than $4,500. Check out the following video of the new HDX.

We first saw the HDX earlier this year. Relatively few people have purchased this 15.5-pound beast, as it is definitely geared towards enthusiasts.

HDX buyers can chose between a WSXGA (1680×1050 pixels) display or a WUXGA (1920 x 1200) display that offers a native 1080p viewing experience.

In addition to the Blu-ray ROM, The HP Pavilion HDX can also be configured with a standard-def DVD burner, HD DVD ROM (player only) or an HD DVD burner. The Blu-ray optical drive is a $200 option.

HP will offer the latest Intel Extreme mobile processors after they’re announced at CES 2008. Graphics are powered by a 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT GPU, or an optional 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS card, which offers about twice the performance.

HP’s announced the Pavilion tx2000, a significant upgrade to its consumer line of tablet PCs. The tx2000 features an active digitizer for improved hand-writing recognition compared to last year’s tx1000 series. Check out the following video of the new tx2000.

The Pavilion tx2000 is a full-featured convertible notebook, with a 12.1-inch display that rotates and folds flat. The display is touch sensitive, which is useful for controlling media applications while in tablet mode. A battery-less digitizer is included for writing and drawing on the screen. When the digitizer is placed near the display to write, the touch-screen functionaity is automatically disabled.

Like the tx1000 series, the tx2000 series is powered by AMD processors. Users will be abe to chose from several AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core processors. Graphics are provided by an integrated NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics card that shares up to 128MB of RAM.

While the tx2000 is compact, it is not as slim as many other tablets on the market. The tx2000 will be available nicely equipped for about $1,500. HP’s Kevin Wentzel said they wouldn’t have been able to hit that price point without AMD.
