HP is updating its Pavilion 14.1-inch, 15.4-inch and 17-inch notebook lines and offering Blu-Ray ROM drives in its consumer line for the first tme. The new dv2700, dv6700 and dv9700 are very similar to the previous models and will accomodoate future components that will be announced in the coming months.

The Blu Ray disc player is a $400 upgrade on Pavilion notebooks. HP will continue to offer HD DVD optical drives as a $200 upgrade option. Both high-def optical drives read their respective high-def formats and can write standard-def DVDs and CDs. Those who opt for either high-def optical drive will need to configure their notebooks with a dedicated graphics card, such as the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M for $149.

HP will continue to offer the standard SuperMulti DVD burner as standard equipment, an optional DVD burner with Lightscribe.

I recommend buying a Blu-ray equipped notebook only if you’re absolutely certain this is the format for you. With the high-def format wars still raging, many movies are only available on one format or the other. Also, most high-def notebook drives are read only, meaning you can’t backup or archive your content most HD DVD or Blu-ray players.
