One thing I find useful with these reviews is that often the 5-star reviewers, who got what they ordered, still point out room for improvement. HP Pavilion DV7 what it said and adds a lot of value in the software as well. So I don't consider the cons as rating reducers.

HP has just launched HDX16 and HDX18 series laptops.  The HDX16 comes with a 16″ display and lots of power-packed features.  The only bad part about HPs is that they come with Vista Premium, which most people will uninstall anyways.  Other than that, it looks like a pretty good buy but make sure get HP warranty, I have two 17″ laptops sitting on my desk that just “died” one day. I couldn’t find anything about the HDX18 as the press release went out yesterday but here’s the summary and specs

HP’s announced that its EliteBook 6930p business notebook will have up to a 24-hour runtime thanks to energy saving components and a  12-cell ultracapacity battery. I spoke with Jeremy Brody from HP, who filled me in on exactly how this is accomplished.

The 24-hour claim is based on testing with  BAPCO’s MobileMark 2005, an application that runs notebooks through a variety of everyday computing tasks until the battery is completely drained, with Windows XP Pro installed.The 6930p’s power settings were set to “HP Optimized,” which is the recommended balanced performance mode.

Jeremy said the tests were set up to “Simulate average usage common tasks such as word, powerpoint, etc… and s,imulate what an average user would be doing during average workday.”

The standard configuration of the 6930p ($1,199) with a standard 6-cell battery will run for about 6.5 hours. Opting for the 12-cell ultra-capacity battery ($189) will boost that number to 17 hours.

A BIOs update and driver update RS2 (render standby 2) extends battery life by another hour. This update is available to existing customers and will come pre-installed on future models.

Every time we turn around, it seems like a new laptop screen size is vying for our attention. Netbooks have turned us on to 9 and 10-inch displays, and PC makers have been buzzing since CES about new 16 and 18-inch screens. That's because those two new larger sizes are 16:9 aspect ratio displays, which match HDTV screens and work perfectly with HD content, such as Blu-ray movies.

So far, we've only seen 16:9 displays in real life from Acer and Sony (including the just-announced Sony Vaio AW 18-inch laptop), but now HP has just unveiled the HDX16 and HDX18, two systems we had a chance to see and play around with in person last week.

These two new laptops have little in common design-wise with the massive 20-inch original HDX laptop (which hasn't had anything other than internal component upgrades since its introduction). That model is tremendously fun, but impractical. These two new systems are more traditional multimedia systems, designed for the den or dorm room.

Hewlett-Packard and world-renowned Asian fashion designer Vivienne Tam have been working together to create the HP Vivienne Tam Special Edition notebook. However, anyone attending Tam's fashion show during New York's Fashion Week at Bryant Park Tuesday has probably already seen it.

The special-edition notebook--which looks to be an HP mini-note, except it's sporting a 10-inch screen--debuted with the usual fanfare a fashion show receives at Fashion Week, but with a high-tech twist.
