A Notebooks.com reader recently asked me what kind of notebooks and gear I use so I snapped this picture of what my desk currently looks like. It’s messy, but it’s a work in progress as I just bought a new desk over the weekend.

The guys from Ergotron recently published a guide on how to set up a portable technology workspace to prevent pain and injuries and it got me thinking about how much my old desk sucked. It was too low and too cramped and after reading the guide I was motivated to switch things up.

The new desk is just a 7′x2′ slab of wood, but it has adjustable legs so I could raise it up to an appropriate height.

To the left of my desk is my Epson Stylus R1800 printer, which I use to make prints of up to 13″x19″. It’s overkill for printing documents, so use a cheaper HP Photosmart printer (off camera) for day to day printing.

I’ve been using the Lenovo S10 quite a bit lately and really enjoy using the little netbook. One of my friends asked me how fast he could get online with it so I filmed this quick video.

The S10 I’m using has a 160GB 5,400 RPM drive and runs Windows Vista Home. It took just 39 seconds to go from powered off to the desktop. It took another 21 seconds to launch Internet Explorer and load the Windows Live home page. The default Lenovo-branded Windows Live home page is relatively heavy and if you set your home page to something light like Google’s home page you could shave another 5-7 seconds off this exercise.

This isn’t the fastest boot time in the world by any means, but it’s more than acceptable considering the S10’s $399 starting price. If you’re in a real hurry to get online you should just put your S10 to sleep instead of shutting it down.

All Lenovo ThinkPad SL, T and X series notebooks will now come standard with an embedded 3G card to connect to AT&T mobile broadband network. The internal 3G card was previously an option on these ThnkPads and cost up to $150.

The ThinkPads are equipped with Ericsson mobile broadband modules. The notebooks will come with 30 days of free AT&T DataConnect service.

This is great news for ThinkPad buyers. Most of the ThinkPad line effectively got a little cheaper for those who were planning to get a 3G card. For those who aren’t sure if the want 3G (or can’t afford the monthly payments) they can always sign up for an AT&T DataConnect plan later. This is especially good news for businesses who have to order ThinkPads in volume and can have trouble predicting exactly which employee will need 3G service.

Lenovo announced is an education version of the IdeaPad S10, dubbed the S10e. The S10e come is completely wrapped in a gray finish.

The IdeaPad S10e has a feature called QuickStart to give students access to a web browser, email, video chat, photo viewer and audio player without having to fully boot the system.

Lenovo’s QuickStart is an implementation of DeviceVM’s Splashtop. Every netbook should have a feature like this.

Schools will be able to custom configure S10e netbooks with the same hardware as the S10 and can also have educational software pre-loaded onto the computers.
