Asus Eee PC gives Sony the willies It's official: Sony fears the Asus Eee PC. It worries the elfin notebook's low price, low spec approach could cut the bottom out of the laptop business.

The highlight of my trip out to Vegas for Sony’s Open House was having lunch Mike Abry, Sony’s senior VP of IT products in the U.S. Sony hasn’t rolled out any new notebooks so far this year, but he promised we’d see some real innovation come mid-year. I always enjoy talking to computer execs, but lunch was extra special because Ross Rubin (NPD analyst), Ryan Block (Engadget’s Editor in Chief), Erica Ogg (cnet writer) and a couple of other techies were there.

Mike was very candid about things Sony needs to improve and what he worries about. Sony’s compact premium notebooks and were ahead of their time, but he’s seeing increased competition on several fronts. Dell is heavily promoting its 13.3-inch XPS m1330 and Apple’s MacBook Air’s been grabbing headlines since it was introduced last month.

Race to the Bottom?

Abry said he is keeping a watchful eye on the ASUS Eee PC, the $299 ultraportable notebook that runs Linux. He thinks the industry will be negatively impacted if too many consumers buy Eee PCs or other cheap alternatives.

Sony is currently holding their annual Open House event in Las Vegas. This is an event where every single product Sony sells is on display, from baby monitors to Bravia TVs to turntables. Though there's little in the way new in regards to notebooks, there are a couple of interesting tidbits Sony announced.

Sony’s sprucing up its FZ series notebook line with nine new color/pattern combos, which will collectively be badged the VAIO Graphic Splash Expression Collection. Starting at $1,300, only 1,200 Graphic Splash Expression notebooks will be made, which means there will be very few others sporting a pink Victorian lace VAIO like yours.

The latest crop of Graphic Splash VAIOs will be available in Pink, Blue and Black. The three patterns are Victorian lace, floral and leaf. Sony’s also offering a choice of four keyboard fonts so you can further customize your notebook.

Techies may scoff at these designs and I won’t be ordering one of these anytime soon, but I’m all for offering more choice to the consumer. A lot of people care more about how a notebook will look in their home than what’s inside of it. That being said, the Graphic Splash edition is no slouch in the performance department. The 15.4-inch notebook comes with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors and DVD-RW drives. A Blu-ray Disc drive is available as a $200 add-on.

Four of the six largest movie studios publish high-definition movies exclusively in Blu-ray format, and the HD-DVD format looks like it’s on its last legs. More and more industry players are backing Blu-ray, but PC manufacturers continue to sell both formats. But are you ready to dive into the high-definition format of Blu-ray?

Netflix announced it’s chosen to rent high definition movies exclusively in Blu-ray format. Best Buy will continue to sell HD DVD players and titles, but will heavily favor the Blu-ray format by giving it premium ad and store placements.

If you’re shopping for a new notebook you should avoid anything that’s equipped with a HD-DVD drive like the plague. In fact, PC manufacturers should do the responsible thing and stop selling HD-DVD equipped notebooks all together.

If you’re after just a Blu-ray player you have plenty of notebooks to chose from, but be prepared to spend a couple of hundred dollars or more.

While I don’t recommend ANYONE buy an HD-DVD equipped notebook, not everyone should rush out and buy a notebook with Blu-ray.
