After growing tired of install errors with Simply Mepis 7.0 Beta 5, I finally wrote it off as a Beta bug with my architecture on my notebook. After all, clean partitions and being able to run other releases of Mepis indicate that there are some bugs that have yet to be dealt with on that Beta release.

Intel LogoIntel challenged European universities to design a device capable of powering laptops using renewable and sustainable energy sources. Today Intel announced that the Spanish team from Polytechnic of Madrid, won the contest with a pedal powered machine.

The cycling action produces energy which is turned into the electricity necessary to power the laptop by a power electronics converter. The solution was chosen as it demonstrates the team’s systematic approach to deal with all aspects of the challenge – from its ease of implementation to the innovative quality of its electronic components – with special features to allow for a realistic usage model. The Spanish device is particularly user-friendly as it enables the user to adopt a flexible, customizable rhythm including any required breaks. Original features include the power electronic converter specifically designed to minimize charging time and keep energy flow at a constant level.

The Polytechnic of Milan (Italy) and Delft’s University of Technology (Netherlands) were runners up. The Italian team devised an ingenious way to utilize hydrogen fuel cell to power a laptop. Delft University’s design is also innovative and consists mainly of a rocking-motion pedal mechanism. An integrated design approach, drawing knowledge from a ...

OLPC ComicBridging the digital divide is a noble cause, but it can have some unintended consequences. Do we really want to turn developing nations’ kids into laptop zombies? This cartoon shows what might happen if the OLPC foundation succeeds.

If this comic is any indication, the OLPC may end up doing more harm than good. There have already been reports of kids using OLPC laptops for less than educational purposes

Zonbu NotebookThe Zonbu notebook is designed to be energy efficient and low maintainence, thanks to automatic system updates and a paid subscription service. The Zonbu notebook starts at just $279 if you’re willing to commit to a two-year, $14.95 per month subscription fee.

The $279 price tag sure sounds low, but the total cost of ownership over the first two years is at least $638 if you want automatic updates, unlimited support and online backups. If you want to buy the Zonbu notebook outright the cost is $479.

Zonbu Notebook“People fell in love with the Zonbu Mini because it freed them from all of the hassles associated with computer maintenance,” said Zonbu CEO Gregoire Gentil. “Now they can have the same benefits on-the-go with the new Zonbu Notebook.” According to Gentil, people shouldn’t have to be their own IT administrators. “We don’t want people to spend a single minute worrying about configuration, setup, crashing hard drives, viruses, hackers, or data loss. That’s our job,” said Zonbu CEO Gregoire Gentil. The Zonbu notebook can be ordered now with a beta version of the operating system and software. The final software will be available in ...

Google Maps for MobileGoogle’s Maps for Mobile has a new feature called “my location” that pinpoints your location via GPS, or approximates it using cell towers if your phone doesn’t have GPS. This solves the dreaded problem of not knowing where to start your driving directions or where to search for a nearby cafe.

To use “my location” users need to download Google Maps for Mobile version 2.0. To find your location on a map you just need to press 0 on your keypad. A blue dot will show you your location if your phone is GPS-enabled. If you’re relying on cell phone towers the a blue circle will indicate your approximate location.

The Google Maps “my location” service is in beta so don’t be surprised if the service is unreliable for a while. It’s disappointing that this service isn’t available with the iPhone’s Google Maps application, even though it’s GPS-less. Even an approximate location is better than having to guess where you are, especially when traveling.

This is definitely a welcome feature, but Google really needs to improve its waypoint information. The service often doesn’t list businesses when I search for exact names or for general categories.
